New wetlands have been constructed in Lucan’s Griffeen Valley Park to improve the biodiversity of the local ecosystem, Dublin Mid West TD has said. The wetlands are part of the Council’s Action on Climate Change plan and will provide a new eco-system that will attract new wildlife to the area and allow flora and fauna to flourish. Local TD Emer Higgins, who is pictured at one of the two locations, has warmly welcomed the initiative.
“It’s great to see the new wetlands installed in Griffeen Valley Park. This initiative by the Council, Dublin Urban Rivers Life Project and their volunteers will help protect and enhance our natural environment by creating a brand new eco-system right here in Lucan,” said Deputy Higgins. “These new wetlands will become home to several different species of plants and animals, which could include everything from newts and frogs, to bats.
“With the sad destruction of the wetlands in Tallaght the year before last, the Griffeen Valley wetlands are a really welcome development for our local natural environment in South Dublin,” said Deputy Emer Higgins. “There has been huge investment into Griffeen Valley Park since Covid including the installation of the Dog Run, brand new hand-made gates and new pathways with further investment underway in the delivery of a teen space, a park pavilion and new bridge.
“It is great to see such investment in this brilliant public amenity and I loved seeing it so busy throughout the good weather being used by so many people, groups and clubs,” concluded local T.D., Emer Higgins. The unveiling of the wetlands comes ahead of the Dublin Climate Action Week which will take place from the 12th-17th of September with the aim of inspiring climate action across the city.
