There has been a boom in all kinds of exercise since the Covid 19 restrictions were introduced.
Over a quarter of million additional people are now cycling compared to this time last year.
Speaking at the start of National Bike Week, Fine Gael TD for Dublin Mid West, Emer Higgins said:
“It’s been fantastic to see more people out and about on bikes in Lucan village and our local parks like Corkagh, St. Catherine’s and Griffeen Valley. The benefits of cycling are huge. It is brilliant for your health, improves the environment and reduces traffic gridlock. I believe that Government needs to encourage this shift towards cycling to continue.
Recently in the Dail, I called on the Minister for Transport to increase the threshold for the Cycle to Work Scheme from €1,000 to €1,500. A national policy promoting cycle can reduce our greenhouse emissions and help tackle the challenge of reduced capacity on public transport. I was encouraged by the response of the Minister for Transport who offered to take up the issue with the Minister for Finance. I hope it’s something he can deliver as it would be great for local cyclists and indeed local cycle shops like Staggs.”
