Clarity needed for people living in Ireland on temporary visas

Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Justice and Equality, Jim O’Callaghan, has called on the Minister for Justice to offer some reassurance to those people currently in Ireland on temporary visas who, due to travel restrictions, are unable to leave the country.

Deputy O’Callaghan said: “The Department of Justice and Equality issued certain advice last week to applicants seeking international protection and those in Ireland on student visas regarding updated measures to respond to COVID-19.

“In light of developments and in particular, the latest restrictions on worldwide travel, it would be helpful if the Minister could reassure all persons currently in Ireland on temporary visas that those visas will be extended pending a relaxation on the travel restrictions currently in place”.

“I would like to remind people to stay safe and practice social distancing during the current health crisis which we are experiencing. It’s important that everyone remains informed and this is why I am calling on the Minister to give people some clarity on where they stand in terms of visas,” concluded Deputy O’Callaghan.
