Alternative plan for frontline workers’ childcare must be put in place immediately

Anne Rabbitte T.D. has called for an alternative childcare solution to be put in place for frontline workers’ following the news that a plan to provide temporary childcare in their homes has been cancelled.

Deputy Rabbitte said: “An alternative solution needs to be found here and quickly. We cannot expect frontline staff to be worrying about how they are going to meet their childcare needs at a time when they are doing tremendous work across the country.

“Frontline staff should not be out of pocket financially. The failure to get this scheme off the ground is embarrassing for the Minister and one that must be re-examined immediately, and a roadmap needs to be drawn up as to how a proper solution is going to be found.

“What concerns me most is the failure by the Department and the Minister to get this plan up and running, they have cited a low up take in interest as one of the main reasons but we need to get real here, and come up with a plan that is going to work and benefit frontline health care workers.

“The time for talking is over now, we need action and that is what must be worked towards now,” concluded Deputy Rabbitte.
