Local Fianna Fail TD for Dublin Mid-West John Curran has welcomed the recent Government announcement of €116,000 in total in funding to tackle illegal dumping, litter, dog fouling and graffiti in South Dublin.
Commenting on the recent funding announcement, Deputy Curran said: “€80,000 of this funding is from the 2018 Anti-Dumping Initiative (ADI) and is to specifically tackle the issue of illegal dumping. I know that for many people illegal dumping is a scourge in our communities. Local Tidy Towns groups are often onto my office explaining that they simply cannot keep up with the amount of illegal dumping in particular black spots across the county.
The scope of the projects being funded here include: clean-up operations, household bulky waste initiatives, awareness campaigns, preventative measures and surveillance operations.
Projects that have been approved to benefit from the €80,000 funding in South Dublin County Council are Clonburris SDZ, St. Cuthberts Park in Clondalkin, and Meile an Rí Playground – Balgaddy – Lucan.
A further €36,000 is being allocated to South Dublin County Council through the 2018 Anti-Litter and Anti-Graffiti Awareness Grant Scheme (ALAGS) – this scheme provides funding to local authorities to conduct public awareness and education campaigns at a community level targeting litter, dog fouling and graffiti. I welcome any initiative that will increase awareness of litter and dog fouling in particular has many health risks in our communities especially for children. And those who continue to illegally dump must be caught and prosecuted”, concluded Deputy Curran.
